Thursday we followed the east main and the curve to the south tracks. The removal/recovery of tracks and ties for our underground train will be a time consuming project but what a trip!

Progress on the train engine also took a step forward today.
An engineer will be out Saturday to size the electric motor for the engine. He will also check the compatibility of our existing chargers. Since our trams are 48 volt systems, we will try to run the train on a similar setup.
Check back for further updates!

Exhibits are constantly changing here at the Kansas Underground Salt Museum, and the newest one already has a major element in place. You may have seen it on TV before, but I doubt that you'd recognize it. It's called the Myronmobile, and it's an old, 1984 Pontiac that has seen better days. It was brought underground to ferry miners from one part of the mine to the other, and was recently retired. It's named after its driver, Myron Marcotte, the mine manager, and he generously donated it to the museum once it was past its useful life. It was made into an icon after its 15 minutes of fame on Dirty Jobs (click on "preview clip" near the bottom of the page) with Mike Rowe, as it was the car that Mike rode around in during filming and can be seen in the episode. Soon a couple of other articles used on the day it was filmed will be added in, so check back to see what we'll add!

Google designates Underground Salt Museum "favorite place"
"Congratulations! You’re a Favorite Place on Google", the letter began. The world’s leading search engine was acknowledging the significant number of its users who searched Kansas Underground Salt Museum on google for driving directions and other information.
Because of that popularity, Google sent an interactive window decal that declares the Salt Museum is a "Favorite Place on Google." The decal includes a special bar code that visitors can scan with cameras on their phones to directly access the museum’s listing on Google, read and write reviews, and add the museum as a favorite if they hadn’t already.
Linda Schmitt, Executive Director of the Salt Museum, said the decal has been placed at the ticket counters in the visitors center. "We certainly recognize the power of Google and its vital contribution to our marketing communications," she commented. "We are very pleased to have been selected for this fun and innovative program."

HUTCHINSON, KS— Those who have made the trip into the Kansas Underground Salt Museum know the elevator is very efficient for taking people up and down the 650-feet. They would also know this new piece of equipment for the Hutchinson Salt Mine won’t quite fit.
However, it will. But only after two workmen spend a week and a half getting it ready. which they are doing right now. It is being dismantled and cut into pieces as needed for the trip down. Three workmen will then spend two weeks putting it back together and getting it in working condition.
This equipment is known in the mining industry as an LHD -- Load-Haul-Dump -- and is about 8 feet tall, 31 feet long, and 7.5 feet wide. The unit weighs 65,710 pounds (32.855 tons). Five tons of that is just the tires -- the 28-ply tires are 5.5 feet tall and each weighs 1.25 tons. The bucket capacity is 7.7 yards, which translates into 7.7 tons of salt.
The gentleman above pictured by it is 6'6" tall!
