The hallway you see when you get off the hoist underground was once a solid chunk of salt. The map indicated it was 50 feet thick, but it turned out to be more than double that. They blasted a total of 130 feet in about 16 hours.

Miners drill holes 9-10 feet deep into the walls and pump them full of an ammonia nitrate and diesel fuel mix called ANFO, then wire them to blast. Red lines are used to mark the blasting areas.
