Halloween brought out some interesting characters at the museum on Sunday, when the Kansas Underground Salt Museum held a reception for the recently held “140 Character Conference- Smalltown.”  Attendees were encouraged to dress in costume and explore the museum located 650 feet below the surface of the Earth. Eight states were represented at the party including: Kansas, Oklahoma,  New York, Texas, Arkansas, Nevada, Missouri and Iowa. Costumes varied from Jeff Pulver’s “Friar” and Becky McCray’s “Safari Hunter” to Ori Bengal’s “Salt Mime” and Phil Buehler’s “Grenadier Guard.”

Jeff Pulver’s 140 Character Conference on Monday was a look into the “State of Now” in regards to the groundbreaking new ways people are leveraging social media in the real world, how it is defined, and the stories of people who have been effected by this new interactive media.  It’s being used in the classroom, the office…even out on a tractor harvesting crops!

Who would have thought that social media could be used (and even has a use) in so many places, industries and settings.  What is the Kansas Underground Salt Museum contributing to this “State of Now?” We already utilize social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook and we even post videos on YouTube. We are even hosting the first-ever underground tweetup on Saturday, November 13 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm! “Tweet at 650 Feet” will be an opportunity for Twitter.com users to share their experience, post pictures and tell their friends and followers about us via smart phones and laptops UNDERGROUND while networking and touring the museum!

The Kansas Underground Salt Museum would like to thank Jeff Pulver, @JeffPulver and Becky McCray, @BeckyMcCray for bringing the 140 Character Conference (#140conf) to Hutchinson. Did you make it to the reception Sunday night? We want to thank you too for making Halloween at the museum such a fun evening. Here is the roll call of everybody that came…if we missed you, let us know and we will get you on the list. Click on the names to be taken to their Twitter profile and start interacting!
