KANSAS UNDERGROUND SALT MUSEUM 
TO PARTICIPATE IN BLUE STAR MUSEUMS

The Kansas Underground Salt Museum announced the launch of Blue Star Museums, a collaboration among the National Endowment for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and more than 1,500 museums across America to offer free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day 2012. Leadership support has been provided by MetLife Foundation through Blue Star Families.

During its first years of operation, Carey Salt Company offered tours, especially to school children. They stopped offering tours in the 1960s, and there was no public access to the salt mines until KUSM opened six years ago.

The Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) came to Hutchinson in 1958 to perform tests to see if the mine was a suitable place to dispose of materials. They tested for about ten years but decided it wasn't the right spot.
