A Great Adventure PDF Print E-mail

We got a nice letter from a family who recently visited. They graciously agreed to let us share it. Don says they've already washed their salt crystals and getting them sealed is on the agenda for tomorrow!

-----

thank-youOur family was in Hutchinson last week for the 3A state basketball tournament, and we took the opportunity to visit your museum with our two youngest sons on Friday afternoon. It was a great adventure, and every staff member was helpful and courteous.

You have a fantastic tourist attraction. We plan to tell our friends and family about it.

My boys will be presenting the information they learned to their classes so that they can prove they did more than just watch their brother play basketball on their day away from school!

Keep up the good work… and thanks for a great adventure!

Day Trip To Hutchinson PDF Print E-mail
Written by Monte Miner

When you make a trip to Hutchinson to visit the Kansas Underground Salt Museum, take time to see some other spots in town. Here's just one suggestion of a day in Hutchinson.

KUSM20130308-1428Start the day by shopping Downtown Hutchinson. Find beautiful bits of history at Armstrong Antiques, vintage toys at the Toy Depot, and fairly traded handicrafts from around the world at the Et Cetera Shop. If you've been looking for the perfect kitchen gadget, you're likely to find it at Apron Strings Kitchen Store.

When you're ready for lunch, try Cool Beans inside a retro train station for a sandwich, or enjoy some wood-fired pizza at Jillian's Italian Grill.

Spend the afternoon at the Kansas Underground Salt Museum. Go on the Dark Ride, enjoy the train, and linger in the museum.

If you're up for dinner before leaving town, try Anchor Inn downtown. This Mexican food restaurant has been in business since 1977 and offers a large buffet.

Make plans to come back another day and enjoy more of Hutchinson!

Nice Letter from Visitor PDF Print E-mail

We sometimes get nice letters from people who visit the Kansas Underground Salt Museum. This past week, we got this one from Val, and it made our day! She has graciously given permission for us to post it here, so you can share our thrill.

-------

Hello,

MP900448645My name is Valerie and I am deaf.  I went to see the salt mines yesterday, March 6th at 2 PM with my husband. I was extremely impressed with the visit. Not only was it a fantastic tour and packed with interesting information, but the staff was amazing also.

They made sure to make everything readily available to me, including making it possible for me to reserve a tour through email (we ended up walking in but I deeply appreciate the speediness and readiness I was accommodated with) they made sure to talk to me so I could try and read their lips, they asked if there was anything special they needed to do to help me enjoy the experience the same way a hearing person would. They even had a copy of the information the tour guides would be talking about so that I could read along. The mini-videos shown along the tour even had subtitles.

The staff were very reassuring and friendly and made it a wonderful, wonderful experience. I am telling ALL of my friends and family - deaf and hearing - about it.

I do not often experience this level of friendliness and accommodation when I go visit places. The staff at the Salt Mines in Hutchinson, KS went above and beyond my expectations.

Superiors/bosses: please be sure to let your workers know they are doing such a wonderful job! THANK YOU for making my tour one of the most interesting, comfortable and wonderful experiences I have ever had. I will never ever forget it.

Val

When you get off the hoist underground, you'll be in what is called, "The Narrows." The corridor was a solid chunk of salt blasted open for the museum. Be sure and check out the miners names written on the wall from the day they blasted.
